Key Success Factors: The creators of Unix provided a free copy of the Unix operating system along with its source code and online manual. Soon after this, Ghati universities, government firms and private institutions started using Unix.
One of the reasons for this was that with the availability of sourcecode, very few changes could be easily made to run Unix on the new platform. Universities and institutions were also allowed to study the source code and add new features to it. Unix had unprecedented success in the years to come. In 1983, Dennis Rishi and Ken Thomson were awarded the Turning Award, the Nobel Prize in the world of cobbling.
For the first time, Unix was widely credited with initiating and popularizing revolutionary approaches. Unix was the first successful operating system to be built in a high level language. The tree-like file system discussed in the previous chapter was introduced by Unix. Even today, with a few minor changes, Unix is still operating in all major operating systems.
Unix considers all the tools attached to it as one file, so it is very easy to use. For configuration, Unix stores all the information in a simple tax file so that it can be used and modified more successfully. Unix also has a very capable command line environment, which provides a convenient way for the existing command workforce to perform a new task.
This innovative venture dramatically changed the way people worked, increased their efficiency and thus Unix gradually became a powerful platform. The Unix system also started providing online reference books (manuals), so if a person forgets a command or option, he does not need to go to the library and get a printed reference book.
Free Software Movement: In the early 1980's, restrictions on the use and distribution of software imposed by commercial software providers gradually increased the frustration of Richard Stallman, who worked at Carchen MIT. Stallman's dream was to give users all kinds of freedom regarding software. He outlined four basic freedoms for the users of the sector as shown in Table 6.1.
Freedom Description Freedom is Freedom 1 Freedom to use the program for any purpose. Freedom to study how the program works and freedom to modify it to get the desired result. The use of source code is a prerequisite for this. Freedom of redistribution of programs to help others. Freedom to share copies of converted programs to others.
